As I was riding my bike through downtown Lethbridge this afternoon I noticed for the first time that there are punctuation marks on some of the buildings. This exclamation point is found on the west side of the Lethbridge Fire Hall #1. There are five in total: Lethbridge Fire Hall #1, the Lethbridge Public Library, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Oddfellows Hall, and the Trianon Building.
Here is a quote from another blog by Megan Morman about these punctuation marks that explains a bit where they came from. "“Downtown Lethbridge” began with the idea of making buildings and their stories legible: their design and architectural style and their actual history and use, as well as the uses and histories that the public assumed or imagined for them. Visually subtle and deliberately ambiguous, they blended in with the structures’ existing design. Punctuation marks give language structure; they are signs that can either aid interpretation or completely change meaning. The punctuation shapes, based on Monotype’s version of Century Schoolbook Bold, were cut with a plasma router from 1/8 stainless steel. This project literalizes the task of ‘reading’ architecture as text, as well as considering that buildings themselves speak." Today's photo is the logo for my new Etsy store! If you haven't been on Etsy before I recommend you give it a look. It's an online marketplace where anyone can create a shop and sell their own products. Many stores are filled with handmade products such as mine with paintings. Take a look at my Etsy store and do some browsing around at others too!
www.etsy.com/ca/shop/BrianSloanPaintings Yet again another gold and another photo that isn't mine. Derek Drouin of Canada, won the gold in the men's high jump in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics this evening. For his winning jump he cleared an astounding 2.38 metres. Derek comes from Corunna, Ontario. In the 2012 summer olympics in London, he won a bronze medal. In the 2014 season he cleared 2.40 metres becoming one of then men to clear that height in an outdoor competition. At age 26 we hope to see Drouin again at the 2020 summer olympics!
I couldn't help myself today but use a photo that isn't mine. Andre De Grasse's won the bronze medal in the 100m dash in the 2016 summer olympics last night. He's a 21 year old Canadian, and according to Usain Bolt, he has the potential to become the next biggest runner in the world. De Grasse's first race was in grade 11 in basketball shorts from a standing start because he didn't know how to use the blocks. Coach and scouter Tony Sharpe was there and saw his potential. He ran a personal best in the finals of the 100m dash in the olympics running a 9.91.
The olympics continue until Sunday, August 21. So if you haven't had the chance to watch any events, there is still time to catch some of the action! August 12, 2016 August 13, 2016 August 14, 2016 We were camping in Waterton for the last five days so that's where these three pictures come from. We had some cooler days but on the 13th we were able to get out swimming and kayaking at Emerald Bay. Porsha and I kayaked along the north shore of the Middle Waterton Lake and were able to watch a mother black bear and her three cubs bath and walk along the shoreline for about 200 meters. It was such a cool thing to see. I've never seen three cubs with a mother before. In total over the 5 days we saw 8 bears.
